Advice That Stuck Part 3

This is the third and final piece of advice that has stuck in my mind. Part 1 is here and part 2 is here.

This piece of advice I came across this year, so not as old as the other ones, but one I think about a lot, have quoted a lot and is so simple I love it.

If you're saying yes to this, what are you saying no to?

This came from the book: The Coaching Habit by Michael Bungay Stanier

This simple sentence has helped me decide on what to do or not to do. What to say yes to when people ask me to help out. It's also helped me in my everyday work with the small team I lead. Helping them reframe the work they are doing, or the extra work we get asked to do.

Whatever the ask, or the task or thing putting it through this simple filter helps me pause and come up with the best answer.

I find it useful to push back gently on requests, or to explain why some things haven't been done.

It's easy to remember, and also just as easy to apply.
