Are You Watching or Listening?

Here's a roundup of what I've been up since the last post.

I almost lost my shit at work. I guess it was a build up of stress. Once I went for a walk, decided to go back and took some deep breathes it all seemed good again.

Still not sure what the next step is in the career / job front. I'm typing this before I go back to work after having 4 days off. I've always had the ability to switch off from work when I go home, which is a good thing to be able to do.

This time it sort of feels differently. I just don't care too much about work. If I never went back, it wouldn't bother me. Interesting.

I ended up going to a metal detecting rally. I've never been one to one before as I'm new to the hobby. I didn't know what to expect to be honest. Turns out it was great.

Everyone was very nice, and the whole thing was very inclusive. No matter the age, experience, gear or ability it was just a great event. It helped solidify what I was doing, the things people were finding and just showed just how much stuff is in the ground and how random it is to find things.

The only limiting factor for anyone keen to take up this hobby is the money needed to buy a detector. Something that was always the limiting factor for me. It pays to buy something decent from the start and do your research.

We hit a milestone with the podcast this week as well, we've been doing it for 12 years now, which is crazy. We've broken most of the podcast rules.

We get consistent downloads. Nothing massive at all, but always consistent. We do wonder who is listening to it though. It's hard to work out.

Even when we asked for audio from people that listen, via a simple form we built, we got the 4 messages from our die hard listeners, which is great. But I wanted to hear from the random people, the people we don't know are listening.

It's an interesting experience creating a podcast and releasing it into the world. It's much like writing a blog. It's up to you on how much you share.

People ask why we've been doing it for so long, especially when we aren't making money from it. There are a couple of reasons we say.

  1. It's a way to catch up every week, as podcast hosts to find out what we've been up to.
  2. Having a podcast puts you into the mindset of trying new things, or doing things you normally wouldn't, as it can make a good podcast story.
  3. Much like a blog, it captures our lives overtime.

My takeaways for these past couple of weeks? Well, it's good to get outside even if it is to dig up rubbish out of the ground.

Understanding or realising what motivates you for work can really help.

You never really know who is reading, listening or watching as you go through your life. Make it interesting.
